Default OT: modern day Elite? X2:Threat on the way

okay, i've been offline for a while - but thought i would jump back on to try and steal Starfury's thunder. Dont get me wrong, SF looks like a great game, and its going to get my money. If for no other reason than to support the development of SE5, and to get a sneak peak at the combat engine.

but as many of you old space game grognards will remember, Elite was the mother of all space exploration / trader games, giving birth to games like TW:2002, privateer, and freelancer. Egosoft's X, and the long heralded sequel X2 are the firt games that come close to reviving Elite's vision.

Players can buy / modify / outift ships and fighters, sure. but prices of goods are based on real world supply and demand. distance of resources to the factory, and demand in a given area for finished goods. increase weapons value by starting a war. decrease supply by blowing up a factory. start a war by forcing an empire to move their trade route through hostile teritory for some valueable resource that you control. control resources by building a merchantile empire of trade ships, starbases, resource extractors, factories, and the like.

This, in short, is the game of games for fans of space-flight / free-trader simulations. bar none. no exceptions. this is it.

and now it has a release date, September of 2003. check out more info, and pre-order at www.egosoft.com

so.. how's everything else been on the forum? any new mods? what kind of mods can we expect for starfury?

This game looks pretty good. I'll probably buy it after I read some reviews and so forth.

My first priority still remains with Starfury though. Well, that's my second priority I guess; first would be getting a computer that will perform better.

Looks cool.
It could be way better than the much over-hyped freelancer. Well, freelancer was not so bad, but I really need the feel of a joystick in these sort of games. Then most of enemy ships used to come straight at me instead of splitting targets with my buddies. And random missions were ALWAYS "go there and shoot ". Boring.

Overall a disapointment. I regret the money I put in it. If I put 1 cent in X2 and get disapointed, I will go directly for Puke's head in every single PBW I can find him.

Ahh, Elite. My once favourite game. I still think thay had the best 3D radar map made.
And in the sequels, the stellar map was brilliant aswell.

Looking forward to this on.

Would you like to play the original elite again? Some very kind and dedicated person has ported it to java and dropped it onto their website for your enjoyment:

It's good but I can't decrease the speed, I don't use an american keyboard.

Edit 1:
Hey, what if I press Ctrl ALT f1....
Will have to try.

Edit 2:
It's windows, not as good as DOS used to be.
Will have to add it first in the control panel....

Work...You don't have permission to do this!, will have to wait until I get home.

How do you enter the !#$%&* rotating space station ? I always crash into that !!
He he. haven't tried it on the java-ported Version, but on my trusty old C64 many years ago...

The trick was to get onto the imaginary axis of rotation of the SS. So move towards that, and rotate your ship to look straight at the 'slot'. When all the sides of the SS were symmetrical (they were docedahedrons or suchlike?), you could move straight towards it. You might have to rotate your ship so that the 'slot' was horizontal, can't remember.

Anyway, I do remember taking HOURS doing this before buying that docking computer.

All you elite-fans might want to take a look at www.eve-Online.com. However this thing is a $12pcm subscription...

Rigelian is right.
What is needed is training and training.
There are two different ways.
The best and safest is to rotate in phase with the space station.
The funniest and mostly deadly is to put on enough throttle and adjust the speed so that you enter when you are in the right position, tricky but doable!
You must enter without hitting the walls, i e when you are facing the rectangle as common hangar doors.

I used to play it on the BBC micro and the Amstrad CPC-464.
