Space port needed for research?

When I list colonies according to their production, research output does not have the parentheses that normally indicates that a planet's production is unavailable. Does this mean I do NOT need to build a space port on planets with only research centers? Also, the descrption of "space port" indicates that it makes resources available in the system where the space port is built. Does this mean that I only need one per star system, or is one needed on each planet?
