It's my understanding that the milky way can't be visualized from earth. Unfortunately our view is from edge on (and within) and so we can't see many of the galaxy's features. Guess-O-Mania. I've read several (low-brow) articles in which astronomers argue the spirality versus bar-shapeness of the Milky Way, suggesting that even the most basic topological questions are likely to remain un-answered.
But, there are plenty of snazzy pics out there, just assign one like every other science writer!
