The odd thing about this is the reference to 1946-2020.....we haven't used 2020 as an end date for a couple of years .

"This is all of great help to scenario and campaign designers, of which there are many. More than being just a mere multiplayer bash sandbox, winSPMBT is a toolbox for anyone who wants to recreate their favorite post-World War II conflict, as long as it's platoon level or higher (the truly insane can go up to regiment). WinSPMBT ships with hundreds of scenarios and quite a few campaigns. As well as re-fighting Cold War's most famous battles, you also get to fight drug lords on the US border, enact French hostage rescue operations in Africa, or even carry out a pulp movie scenario (literally) where the US forces take on dastardly Nazis. Heck, some enthusiasts start crafting scenarios based on real life conflicts that have barely just begun, even if that is a little grim. I can't think of any other game that gives you that many options without sacrificing realistic detail."

"You will remember the ricochet sound of rounds bouncing off armor to your dying day."

I still remember my first time with the game. I wasn't aware of the fast arty option and I abstained from using artillery on massed armor formations (especially if I was firing with say Grads) because of the goddamn "pew-paaan!!!" 4-8 times in a row by a single shell. After a while I could listen this sound while I was sleeping!

Sound is what I turned off when I got the original demo version of SP1 on a stuck-on computer magazine CD back in what 1994/5?.

I usually turn sound off if its not vital to the game - e.g. in flight sims. It saves waking the neighbours at 2AM

The demo game was complete, but just had no LOS etc blocking from hills, so you could fire and spot right through them. But you got to play the long campaign etc.

I think I was into battle 5 of a UK WW2 long campaign when I realised the shops in Edinburgh were still open for a couple of hours, so took a walk into town and bought it off the shelf at the Virgin Megastore on Princes Street, which was always open till about 8/9 in the evening, like Waterstones bookshop.

I Don't want to steer away from topic but now that you mention this, i every now and then just for nostalgia's sake like to read the initial impressions on the genie messages when Steel Panthers was released in 95. We've come along way..

While I did buy Steel Panthers 1 and 2 when they were released, I didn't spend that much time with them. Partly because I didn't have time and partly because I preferred Panzer General. That changed with the release of Steel Panthers 3 which just clicked with me. A few years later, after I had stopped playing the games in question, I got to play the then Matrix release, which I liked but again like SP1-2 I just didn't spend much time with it. I don't remember what drove me here, perhaps a forum post or something, but eventually I found out about this game and eventually I bought the CD version. I think when the PBEM campaigns were released, but it could have been before it, memory...

It's for some time now one of my all time favorite strategy games (easily among the top 15) and probably my top favorite wargame.

BTW, I just checked mobygames and the game (WINSPMBT) is not even mentioned. WW2 is but not this. I checked to see if I can add info but I couldn't find a way, I think only them can do it.
