Default Win XP Issue

Just loaded SEIV 1.49 on my new 1.9 gig machine running Win XP and...

The ships move very slowly. Much slower than on my P3 with Win 98. I had loaded the Mephisto mod pack, I unloaded it and nothing changed.

Is this a Win XP issue, or is there a setting somewhere I can't find?

Please help.

Interesting. That happened to me when I moved to a new system with a Win XP P4 1.6 system.

I have a Geforce 2 MX graphic card, what are you using?

See thread

Question about System Ship Movement Delay Milliseconds

I turned off the graphic animation on ship movement and movement is instant. Takes a little while to get used to the speed but it's a lot better than slow.

I don't have XP but from what i gather you can turn ship movement animation on (too weird otherwise) and set the delay to something in the area of 3 or 4 or 5. This delay is per frame of animation, not per square of movement. play around but you shouldn't go much higher than 10 i should think. one guy tried 5000 by accident, the movement overloaded his computer.

OT--I was wondering what XP is like. Do you guys have any problems... Do any of you have Sonic Forge or Cakewalk Sonar XL or Musicmatch 7.0 basic or pro? Problems with them? Does SE4 act wierd in any way other than the move delay.

EDIT:BTW--the setting is in settings.txt at the bottom or top i forget

"... one guy tried 5000 by accident, the movement overloaded his computer..." - that was me

The delay doesn't help. It only works if ship animation is on and the ships move too slow with it set to 0, and minus numbers don't work.

This isn't a big problem, I just needed to get used to having the ships either move real slow, or move super fast. After some experimentation I decided I prefer the fast move.

I don't have any of those software titles you listed except for possibly a pre-installed free copy of Musicmatch 6 Jukebox would be closest.

I have found that everything I was runing on Win ME works on Win XP: SE4, EU2, Redshift 3 (old Quicktime install needed), Operational Art of War - COW, Lotus Smartsuite 97, Microsoft Encarta 97, Britanica 2001.

Nice thing is if a program crashes you can just kill it and XP carries on running. Also the hardware plug and play is good. I plugged in my old printer and that's all I had to do - it installed itself after that.

I had that problem when I reinstalled SE4 on my 98 machine. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why everything was so slow. It took me a bit before I realized that it had reset my 'allow music from CD' to ON. I turned it off (both in settings and in game) and all was good again.

I've never been able to get the music to work. *sigh*

I will try turning of the music, then see about the animation setting thing.

BTW, I also have a 64m Geforce 2 card.

I looked at the other thread and haven't seen anything "official" on this problem. Is MM ignoring it because of the Gold release?

I still enjoy a familar relaxing game of Master of Orion (I not II) and my favorite shooter Privateer II. I have a nice collection of old DOS games complete with boxes etc...

So will XP run these games? If not, what hoops do I have to jump through for multiple operating systems?

P.S. I had to jump through hoops to get Privateer II running on WIN98 with a SBLive card.
Email me If you want a copy of my boot disc edits.

UPGRADES HAPPEN!!!

I have trouble with slow graphics when playing SEIV on my new dell with XP also. My guess would be a problem with directX. Lucky for me I have more than one computer.

Unfortunately, XP (or DirectX 8 I guess) has a major problem with certain graphics card and motherboard combinations. This manifests itself in games with 3D graphics content, causing BSOD crashes in the most extreme cases. I've had this happen with Half-life, Quake and even Age of Empires on my machine (ABIT KT7, Athlon 1100 and Geoforce 256 card).

Your problem seems like a more minor Version, I've yet to have SE4 crash in the same way (relatively primitive graphics, I guess). There is a beta patch out there from VIA, but this didn't help me 8-( We probably have to wait for a patch from Microsoft, apparently they have 8000+ formal reports of this problem...
