Default Picking nations

I've just got this game and I think I'm figuring it out largley- still rubbish at it of course, get killed by enemy nations every time.
One thing I can't for the life of me figure out though is how do you pick a nation? My manual is missing and about all I can do to pick nations is to go all the way through starting a new game to the last bit then press cancel and go back to the start and hope the next random pick is a interesting one.
Surely theres a better way? How do you choose from a list?

I don't have the game in front of me, but when you start a new game there should be a screen where you can add more AI nations. It defaults to 1 human and the rest AI. The default is a random nation for each player, but clicking on that should bring up the nation list for that era.
The same place you set AI difficulty.

It always seemed pretty obvious to me and is now second nature, which is probably why I can't describe it well.

How did you purchase the game? Since if you got it via digital download, then my understanding is that you get a link to download the PDF manual at the same time.

And if you mail ordered it, and the game arrived in the post, then the CD for the game comes attached to the manual with the aid of half a ton of cellophane wrapper. So you literally can't have the CD without the manual if you mail ordered it.

So how is your manual missing when you say you've "just got this game".

I'm confused but my pirate senses are tingling.... :Calahan requests a korn groovy pirate smilie like the other forum has:

Got it passed on from my friend who bought it eons ago. He has a paper manual, but its somewhere in the Americas which is...quite far away. When he moved to Britain he just brought a bunch of his games in a CD wallet, didn't bring proper boxes and manuals and all that.
