Horror attack under Astral Coruption

I am playing under the global AC.

Last turn I lost two tartarian bodyguards when their master was attacked by a Horror and he then cast Returning. The mage escaped but the bodyguards were routed (no leader?) and did not show up anywhere (the province was surrounded by friendly provinces). Is this normal - That routed units disappear during a Horror attack under AC?
And how about Retreating? Can the mage and his BGs escape by retreating?

Horror attacks act the same as assassination attempts. thus they act in a no dominion zone and any retreating unit is as good as dead. therefore having bodyguards is not helpful if your mage can cast returning to escape. otherwise there is always Vortex of Returning to send back your entire army(including bodyguards that is).
