Default TDM use for the first time

OK, so after playing a lot of standard SEIV, I decided to download the TDM modpack of which I'd heard so much and give it a whirl.

Any advice on setting up a challenging game?

Hmm...from what I've heard about it, if you really want a challenging game, make sure the Rage is included, give the AI huge racial bonuses while you get none, and don't add in any neutrals.

That should give you a real run for your money.

And do not forget to set the Computer Player Difficulty and Bonus to high. With TDM this should give you a good challenge. While you are at it make sure you start in a small quadrant.

Did not mean to have a thumbs down. Actually for TDM I give it two thumbs up.

Best results I have gotten for a game involve the following...

Medium or Small spiral map,
Use Similtaneous(sp?) play (sim-move, like pbw)...no tactical combat...
High AI difficulty,
Medium/or High AI bonus,
Races: Rage, Aquilaeian, Xi'Chung, Pundion, Torons, (and non tdm- the Zorians, or Orks)
Use 5000 point empires for the AI, 2000 or 3000 for yourself.
Be creative, don't just go straight for PPB's, take Grav Hellbores, or Torp's...
Medium Tech Start (less theory for the AI to get, more time for weapons), with LOW or Medium tech cost.

3 planets to start, full resources/good planets as well, if you don't want all the extra research points, just waste them...But they do the AI tonnes of good.

Anyway...just the way I like to play...

For best results use a good planet, a large medium age galaxy, no neutrals and no more then 6 or 7 AIs. More AIs only means more borders for the AI and it will not build up quite as good as if it has some room for colonization.

Note that it's also possible to turn off tactical combat during setup on a sequential move game; you don't necessarily have to play simultaneous move.
