Newbie needs a Glossary (and a helping hand)

I am a new player who wants to get his feet wet, preferably with other less experienced players.

But I feel like I need a glossary to find my way around. What is an MA or LA or EA or a CBM?

Can someone kindly direct a new player to an appropriate game, and let me know how to get started?
