Anyone tried one of those eeepc /mini note/aspire one etc ultra mobile notebooks to check if this game works on them?

I plan to get one, though just about every time I have made up my mind then somebody seems to have announced a new model, have lost track of the eee pc variants already . I have seen an Acer Aspire one in a nice shade of blue at the local PC world, and loved it, but it was an early model in Linux, so no use to me. I'm likely to plump for the Aspire one or the MSI Wind (PC World's re-badged "Advent 4211" one is 50 quid cheaper) in XP.
There should be no problems running the game on any XP netbook, in CD version set to 1280 windowed mode and you should be able to run it wide screen - though most of these things are a weird 1280 by 600. Installing it - I would install and fully patch up to a desktop machine, and then copy the folder over on the wireless network, or with a USB stick. You probably would want something bigger than the original "baby" eee pcs, as these only had a couple of gigs of SSD?.
As with any laptop - if you want to play games, pack a mini mouse as well, it is miles better than trying to use a trackpoint (like my IBM had - never again! ) or trackpad, those are really only useful for net browsing or word processing, not precision work.
1 kilogram weight and 3 or maybe 4 hours battery life is the main selling point to me, after the old IBM laptop which was 3kg and did about an hour on battery if lucky so you had to lug the power brick as well.
Cheers
Andy

Re: Netbooks and winSPMBT?
I might get an Acer Aspire One A150X. It comes with 1.6Ghz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB Ram, 120GB of HDD and an 8.9" monitor at 1024x600 (wtf?) and Windows XP. As a backup machine for my soon to be mine notebook. I will probably just have it when I have to go somewhere or in bed to watch a movie or play winSPMBT.
I like this Acer due to the specs and small screen, though not crazy about the resolution. I don't like the idea of a 10" one, too big IMO.
So I guess it will have to be played at 800x600 windowed mode.
I didn't know I could just copy the folder there, I was planning on copying the installation files from the CD with one of the methods mentioned and install it, but your way sounds better
winSPMBT, going where few games go.

Re: Netbooks and winSPMBT?
I got a MSI Wind Clone, 10" monitor 1024x600 resolution. The game works fine. Even on battery there is no slow down or anything.
In fact I tried a few other games, no proper testing, just some quick in and out play and audiosurf, civilization 3, sid meiers pirates! (the newest one from steam), worked fine.

There is something about playing winSPMBT while lying down on your bed in a small screen, wonderful

Re: Netbooks and winSPMBT?
Suggestion to anyone considering using a netbook and this game, GET A MOUSE! No matter how good the touchpad is, it can lead to some stupid/funny mistakes, plus it is a....dog to scout properly.
Other than that, I believe the netbooks were created just to play winSPMBT. It plays and looks wonderful on it.

Re: Netbooks and winSPMBT?
I just thought of how potentially awesome it would be to play Steel Panthers on a Tablet PC, like a digital board game heh. I suspect a stylus for movement could easily be really useful or really restrictive (though one might easily get used to using the mini-map to select areas of the map instead of scrolling along the edges.

Re: Netbooks and winSPMBT?
I am sure that a stylus would be far better than a touchpad...
The touchpad wouldn't be as bad if I would have an option to disable double tapping to count as a click, but the drivers suck at that.
With a mouse it is very easy of course.
So far I like my netbook

Re: Netbooks and winSPMBT?
The stylus would be fine if not great for all the other commands besides scrolling. The scrolling is what I'd be worried about...that and I don't have enough money to burn on a tablet PC just because it might be cool to play SP on it hehe.

Re: Netbooks and winSPMBT?
Hi, I'm pleased to report that the Asus EEE 901XP plays WinSP in
1024 x 786 (768)? windowed mode. If you hitch up an external monitor, note that the directions in the Asus manual do NOT work,
i.e. use F5 to toggle between modes. You have to right-click on the
desktop and from the resulting short-cut menu: graphics options -->
output to --> monitor. This only plays windowed as well.
Regards, Warwick
