Trading gems for gold?

I'm wondering what price people usually sell their gems for if they are swapping for gold.

Also, what is the usual price in gems for items? I've usually heard that it is around the base price of the item, keeping the forge bonus for yourself if there is one, but I would like to read people's opinions.

Never tried a gem-buy myself, I think it would depend a lot on what stage of the game it was. 1000 gold early game helps a lot more than 1000 gold late game.
