Re: [beginner] a Zerg nation ?
1. Yes, absolutely. One could make a very interesting Zerg nation.
2. No. That material is certainly copyrighted and is, afaik, the property of Blizzard. If you were to lift graphics directly from starcraft you'd need permission from Blizzard (you won't get it) and besides that, the graphics would probably look pretty bad in dom3. The subject of ripping material from other sources or being inspired by other sources such as Warhammer is perhaps one best left alone in this forum, but I know for sure that directly copying graphics from Starcraft is not a good idea, especially if you announce it.
3. Take a look at the other mods on this forum. They will help you work some stuff out and provide examples of what other non-artists have been able to do.

Yep. Well I looked at Warhammer miniatures and artwork, but I didn't use anything as a base or copy/paste.
I'm no artist and I don't have any hidden artistic ability to my knowledge. I just kept making sprites and got a bit more practiced at it. I think anyone can do it, pretty much. Especially now the vanilla sprites are available. I never really used them.

Re: [beginner] a Zerg nation ?
There's already one nation that uses insects spwaning other insects. I don't remember all the details, but it has:
- mobile queens that shapechange (permanently) into immobile, magically more powerful, auto-spawning queens
- blood-based summon spells get you more queens (the mobile ones)
- new "races" (fliers, amphibian etc) come from researching a new kind of a queen summon, who is then morphed into a "building" and starts auto-swapning.
I think the different queens also had different magics, and thus could summon their own spawn via blood spells easily, but had trouble summoning other specialized types.

I think that limit of units you can recruit per turn in a fort could make it hard.

Re: [beginner] a Zerg nation ?
100 is limiting? O_o
Besides, autospawners would be much more thematic than individual recruits.
