Keypad during instalation?

I was installing the game last night and ran into something I thought was a bit weird. I typed the CD verification key in with the number pad, but got an error message telling me I should not use the number pad. Obviously, this is not a big deal, but I was curious to why. Is the keypad somehow more open to hacking?

Dominions has never gotten along with the number pad. You can't use it for typing in things like server port numbers either. It has nothing to do with security. At least it gives a sensible error message now...

I think I have managed to type in IPs and/or ports. It might be due to OS differences or something.
