OT - How to destroy IT as we know it
OK, imagine a computer virus. Imagine a computer virus that searches your computer for .exe, .mp3, and .jpg files. Imagine a computer virus that searches your computer for said files - and has an embedded bittorrent client. Imagine a computer virus that seeds all your .exe, .mp3, and .jpg files on an embedded bittorrent client. Imagine all the people with pirated software, pirated MP3's, and illicit pornography on their hard drives...
See where I'm going???

Re: OT - How to destroy IT as we know it
The MPAA or whatever its called tried that and was sued by Kaaza for it. They used a varation of Kaaza software for their own P2P software that they then offered as a free download. Whoever used it to download music or had Kaaza software on their computer were compermised and most of the music files were corrupted. This prompted Kaaza to file suit and they won.
IT was a chicken [censored] thing for the music and movie association a**holes to pull. If you dig up the old thread on this I think you might find even more info on this.

Re: OT - How to destroy IT as we know it
A lot of people do this accidentally. They put their entire c:\ drive as the folder from which to share files, for 'convienence'. Thus, they open their files to the internet. Some guy started calling those people, telling then bits of files they thought they were personal, alerting them to the problem.

Re: OT - How to destroy IT as we know it
Robert X. Cringley wrote a column {link} in June that predicted that ending "Net Neutrality" could kill BitTorrent.
He mentions that BitTorrent currently uses more than thirty percent of the Internet's bandwidth.

BitTorrent is like many things on the net, such as anonymous servers. The good intentions are massacred by what 95% of it is actually used for.

freedom is such a wicked thing. Good thing total corporate control is coming to the internet to kill it.

Re: OT - How to destroy IT as we know it
Freedom on the internet was misleading anyway. It was never part of the design, it just got out of control.
The internet is a totally democratic system trying to manage millions of small tyrannys. Rather like the UN.

If its like the UN, then where is all of the graft and corruption? OhNever mind, I forgot. We told the UN that the Internet was hands off to them.
We already saw how to bring the internet down recently. An un-named African country didnt pay its satellite bandwidth bill, and the internet went down. I guess they need to start taxing the spammers so that they can keep them connected.
Right now the internet's DNS system is vulnerable to attack. Most people think that any serious attack would be targeted at these servers. So keep your host files up to date, just in case

I suppose next you'll want to ban FTP because it can be used for the same thing?
The point of the article doesn't hinge on what BitTorrent is used for, just that it exists and isn't going away (very nice protocol BTW. Most recent file showed 900 kb/s with it vs 200kb/s via the FTP server that was also available)

Re: OT - How to destroy IT as we know it
Did I say I wanted to ban it? The same could be said of email or www or ssh or irc. The protocols cant be blamed for the users.
