Default I question the competence of the AI at times.

So, here's the deal. Started up a new game, stock, large spiral armed galaxy. About twenty-some turns into the game I meet the Fazrah. We start up a nice little non-agression pact, which they break the next turn. That turn I ask for another one, they accept then break the next turn.

So, I make an example. Destroy one of their worlds, 44 million people lost, not a big deal in galactic standards. They declare war.

Now, I fight them for about four in-game years, and they're down to one planet that has about 28 million people on it, no ships, no cargo, no structures. Nothing. I ask for them to surrender MULTIPLE times. Nothing.

I glass them.

Will SE:V Have better AI?

Star destroyers 20 turns in? Zwuh?

No surrender is a good thing. Otherwise the game ends quickly with a domino effect.

If you want a strong AI challenge try:
CBmod v1.5
1) Install the imagemod if you don't have it already
2) Let the AIs be chosen randomly. This way they will be generated properly.
3) Choose Medium tech start. If you want more of a challenge, use Low tech start and Med/High tech costs.
4) Choose high difficulty and NO BONUS. Team mode for extreme challenge. Low bonus instead of none if you want to be steamrolled.

5) And, of course, don't ask for surrender or offer cheap trick trades. Turn the option off in game setup if you feel the need, or just don't do it.

PS:
Most of these tips, aside from the "use no bonus" will help in stock as well. In Stock, it is fairly easy to beat even AIs that are on high bonus (5x build rate & resources).

By destroying I mean glassing... And by glassing I mean turning their cities into huge craters with level 5 DUC's >.>

Oh. Well, at least in CB, you need to bring dedicated anti-planet weaponry in order to do much damage.

Galciv surrender is neat. There's a 50/50 chance it will surrender to you, or to your hated enemy/closest ally.

Im with you. Im hoping that SEV will have a better answer than "dont cheat them in trades" and such. I WANT to cheat them. I just want it harder to do. Yeah I know. Im not asking for AI. Im asking for AH. An artificial intelligence thinks its a great deal to get all of my resources, tech, starcharts just for their one measly homeworld. It would take Artifically Human to be cheatable but hard to do.

But I can hope

I look forward to the day the computer player will reply to an offer to buy his homeworld with something like:

Do you think I am a stupid human to accept such an deal?

Better diplomatic AI is something I've always hoped and hoped future versions of SE would have. A full-blown politically savvy AI--rather than 3D graphics or detailed ground combat--would make the game even closer to perfect than it already is.

I want to negotiate meaningful treaties, establish dynasties, deal with political intrigue within my own empire... I want the illusion that I am running a government and dealing with alien governments.

Years ago I used to play Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2. During one game I married off a daughter to a rival warlord, causing his hostility to drop sharply. He accepted my gifts, offered gifts to me, and sent troops to help me against enemies. His behaviour was so realistic I felt as if I was playing against a human. Eventually he died, and his kingdom fragmented as his generals fought each other. Some allied with me, some became neutral, some allied against me.

This is the sort of fascinating gameplay I would like SE to provide.

I loved Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I agree, thats my kind of game. One where you can win politically as much as militarily. I know thats not everyones cup of tea but I like it.
