Is Play SEIV A Waste Of Time?
I was just wondering if any one thought that playing this game was a waste of time? I know that after playing it for nearly six years now, I still kind of enjoy playing it off and on. It has a strange appeal that just keeps me interested no matter how many times I play it. However I get nothing from playing the game, say a soar back, blurry vission, and a wasted day on the PC when I could have been out side doing something, anything related to real world activities.
So I ask you, do you feel like you are wasting time when you play this game? Do you feel guilty over it? I do and don't ask me why I can't explain it.

It is no more a waste of time than playing chess...
A very entertaining and addictive type of chess game.
If you're worried about social interaction, chat on IRC while you play.
If you want exercise, you could always put a treadmill in front of your computer

Re: Is Play SEIV A Waste Of Time?
Absolutely not a waste of time!
I'm not a social person by nature, I need lots of time by myself. SEIV (and other computer games) allow me time by myself away from people, time to relax.
Think of it this way: How can playing SEIV be any worse than watching a movie? If you think about it, neither activity is beneficial in terms of the "real world". But in reality, relaxation is extremely important. So SEIV, other computer games, movies, etc. all provide you with an essential part of your life, time away from the stresses of the rest of your life!

For a young person, you have (what I feel is) a good grasp of how to deal with day-to-day life...not to mention beating me to the punch .
I think humans need some "downtime". It's not healthy for a person to just work and be productive all the time. In today's society, a guy needs to sit back and screw off (on a regular basis). This doesn't mean a person should neglect real life, let chores go undone, or neglect one's family. Whether it be watching a movie, painting, or anything that gives a person some sort of satisfaction, I think it's a healthy complement to the 24-hour day.
Lots of people I play with tell me they can't do a turn till "fill in the blank" because of this or that (RL, usually). And, I say the same thing back sometimes. Everyone I've ben in games with understands it just fine.
But, it can be abused, like any form of entertainment can be.
So, is it a waste of time? Not done in moderation, I feel. And I've been playing quite some time now. It's the only game I play (if you don't count our family getting together to play Scattergories or any of the various versions of SceneIt we have) and I'm a movie-watcher, too.

Re: Is Play SEIV A Waste Of Time?
I play while at work with two co-workers. I'm sure my boss thinks its a waste of time... if she were to know. One of the benefits of having a boss that is a 1000 miles away. =) Though we're the best performing members of her team. We see it as a team building exercise.
Nothing is a waste of time, if you are getting something out of it, be it time to yourself or some enjoyment out of wasting a stack of 50 enemy warships.
If you're not having fun, then you're wasting your time.

Even better: Have your computer powered by the treadmill. Or maybe just the monitor so you don't trash the hdd. No movement, no playing!

Re: Is Play SEIV A Waste Of Time?
Even Shirlock Holmes desperately craved "Brain work" when not on a case. I feel the same way about SEIV. It keeps me busy and keeps my brain active when otherwise I would be droning around the house. That is the true waste.
I set priorities on what to do and just after this turn is done...

Just one of the benefits of thinking too much on all manner of subjects...not to mention spending too much time on the forums

No, definitely not a waste of time. If we're having fun and enjoying playing SEIV, that's a good use of our time. We all need to have some fun in our lives.

Re: Is Play SEIV A Waste Of Time?
Yes it is a waste of time! In the same way that exercising or sleep is a waste of time. It keep you mind sharp by making you keep list, make plans, do math, and hand eye coordination. Also you will be prepared to lead the Phongs to galactic conquest if they happen to pop in looking for a new CEO.
If you dont have time to waste youre working too hard! There is a balance in how time should be spent.
