OT Gal Civ 2...
I remember reading this board when the original Gal Civ game out and most right minded people dismissed it but the sequel just came out yesterday and I was wondering if anyone else had tried it? I got it as part of a Totalgaming subscription offer so I wasn't exactly excited, having actually disliked the original, but it isn't half bad though, IMO. Lacks the epicness of a SE game since fleets just have 5 or 6 ships max but the AI is good.

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
We did not dismiss GalCiv. Many of us bought it and felt it was a fine game and in fact recommended it to others. However a lot of us, including myself, became bored with GalCiv after only playing it for a few months.
As to GalCiv II, I do intend to buy it. I only wish it would have come out BEFORE that abismal Star Wars Empire AT War game for I would have spent my money on a worthy game rather than a tic tac toe wanna be space RTS game.
Really that is all that EAW is, Tic Tac Toe with Star Destroyers.
As to Gal Civ II, it really is more of a space civilization kind of game rather than a true 4x game as SE IV or V. Therefore it is understandable that it would be lacking in game depth. However, I would still like to pick it up just to have it for my gaming collection.

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
Fleets can only have 5 or 6 fleets?!? In my opinion, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense at all! Didn't know that...
Anyways, I wasn't aware that GalCiv 2 had been released yet, will probably pick it up when I'm in the city next. I have no doubt it will be an enjoyable game, but my only worry is how long it will be enjoyable. It may become boring after a game or two like the original did. Of course, it may not either

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
It sounds like others here gave GalCiv a lot more time than I did. I didn't like the gameplay of the demo very much and never invested in buying it.
On the other hand, I downloaded a Disciples II demo yesterday, which I am enjoying. I haven't played HOMM or anything since I tried Lords of Magic, which I thought was abysmal. As I have gotten older, I am enjoying turn-based more than "twitch" games.

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
Disciples, eh? Ever given Dominions a try?
Back on topic, I plan on buying GalCiv2 today (I would have yesterday but the GameStop near me hadn't received its shipment yet ) I might even start on making a GalCiv2 mod for SE4, or vice versa It will be really easy to do the tripartite weapons/defenses of GalCiv2 in SE4:
* Beams skip armor.
* Cannons skip shields.
* Missiles skip armor and shields, but can be hit by point defense.
The real trick will be porting over GalCiv's economic system
But just imagine this: an SE4 mod for GalCiv2... where you can put your favorite SE4 components on a ship and have them actually show up on the ship! Even if they are just eye candy
Oh, did anyone see these screenshots:

Don't those Terran ships look vaguely... familiar???
And this one here - "who needs Star Trek shipsets?" :

Don't some of these victory conditions look familiar too? Especially that "5 researches to transcend mortal existence"??? Let's hope the REST of the game is not "inspired" by MOO3

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
Ed, all the ships you see are user made The shipyard works like Doga, pretty nifty but it does take some extreme measures to cut down on pollies. (It removed a ring shaped object on the side of my freighter because it decided I had too many pollies.)
Yeah, also, the game plays nothing like MOO3, it's actually really fun. You know, instead of rip-out-eyelids frustrating like MOO3.

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
Gal Civ I looked pretty limited, in a Civ 1 sort of way - fixed ship types, no fleets, unitary 'planet quality' stamps, and so forth. I was always tempted to buy it, but thought... well... Gal Civ II will just be better in every way, so it would be like watching a movie in mono on a black-and-white 9" screen before seeing it a theater. The impact would be impacted.
Now, I have never played GCI or GCII, but I followed both closely, and GCII looks vastly superior to GCI in many, many ways. They are not like 9" B/W TV -> theater, HOMM II -> III or even Civ I -> Civ II, but more like Zelda I -> Zelda III. In other words, it seems like a much different game - from my outsider perspective. Unfortunately, I do not have time to play right now, so I have not bought it.
There's a demo coming out in mid-March, from what I hear... but I'd like to point out to those of you who were disillusioned by GCI that GCII is not just a graphical overhaul or an expansion with more races and ships; it's more like a new game. With similar mechanics.

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
I've tried the GalCiv I demo once..... and deinstalled it after a few turns It still holds the record for "game that spent the least time on my hard drive". The only good thing about the game was the fact that you had to research Universal Translator before you could read the alien messages, but this was offset by A.) it came really early in the tech tree ( totally realistic), and B.) it only worked because you were forced to play as the humans.
So in short, no, I don't plan on buying GalCiv II I may check out the demo once, but as it stands I certainly don't plan to buy it.

I still cannot believe that they ever went to market with MOO3 and then had the gul to defend that tripe as a "good game."
Galciv in its beta was 10x better than the final version of MOO3. So I have no doubts that GalCiv2 is worlds better.

Re: OT Gal Civ 2...
I'm not too upset at the money I wasted on GalCiv. I did enjoy myself for a few days. But when it comes to MOO3, Thats about a 9.5 on the sphincter factor! That game was expensive!
