Why haven't you contributed to the wiki yet?

Yes, I'm talking to YOU!

The new Space Empires Wiki is a project to bring together every scrap of knowledge about all things Space Empires (including SEIII, SEV and Starfury) an make it available to anyone who wants it. Even without the expected influx of noobs when deluxe gets released, it will be an invaluable resource for us all. We need all the help we can get to get it up and running.

- We need help porting the FAQ and Dubious Strategy guide over. This is largely a cut & paste job, but someone has to do it. Besides, you can learn a lot from working with those documents.

- Documentation for everyday SEIV items need to be written. What is a fighter? What can they do? How do I use them. How do I fight them? How much do they cost and what other aspects of SE do they relate to? What other pages can I refer to for information? All this needs to be done.

- There are about a zillion shipsets out there we'd like to document. Each one will get its own page with picture, flag, and as much information as anyone cares to write. If you've created a shipset, you want people to see it and use it, don't you? Give to the wiki and write it up! Free advertising!

- Has your mod got a page of its own? Why not? People will want to read about it, and will want to know where to download it from.

- Have you written some SE-related fiction? Would you like more people to read it? Create a synopsis page for your story (don't post the whole story though=-) and maybe you'll attract more readers.

- Do you remember playing SEIII? Would you like to spend some time playing it to refamiliarise yourself with it and write some articles about how it all works? It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it...

- Are you an SE5 beta tester who wants to spill his guts about the new game in a series of highly detailled wiki articles..? (Just kidding.)

- Have you lurked in this forum for years, learning stuff, maybe asking questions, maybe even answering some? Would you like to give something back to the community that has been so eager to welcome and inform newbies for the last four years? Come to the Wiki and feel good about yourself!

You don't have to do a lot- just do one page! Half a page! Just go to the talk pages and join in the discussions- Opinions are valuable too, you know. If everyone here did something, we'd have a full wiki in about a week!

I don't understand how to add something to it. Perhaps better detail in that regard, adding information or submissions, would help?

When people create an article and its not finished, most people just put {{stub}} somewhere on the page, and it shows up at this link. It simply means that its a stub that needs expanding.

To start contributing the wiki, its really really simple: create an account here:

and then at ANY page you find yourself reading, simply click on the EDIT tab up top to start editing the article.

To create a new page, first find the page you want it to link from, and edit the page you want to link from and add [[yourlink here]], then save it. When you view teh article, your link will show up as red. Click any red link to create a new page.

Templates have even been setup to make it all painless:

AT: Just click "Edit" on any page.

The first time you do so you'll need to sign up (provide username, password & email - don't worry about privacy, Fyron's running things=-)

Clicking edit on a few already-established pages will let you see the markup that is used. It's not much more complicated than creating a post in this forum.

Finally, as for your "I'm dumb" remark. Dude, you are one of the most productive people in this community. No-one can match your shipset output in terms of quality, and only a very few in quality. There's also OutS which deserves its own page. You have plenty to offer, At.

I dunno, I ported over some Encyclopedia Malfadorica entries, but the new wiki just doesn't seem as smooth -- we have entries for a wikification of the faq, and separate entries for the same term, but only non-faq this time. And what's the deal with "Warp Points for SEIV" or "Neutrals for SEIV" -- aren't they already under the SE4 hierarchy? There must therefore be be 3 or perhaps 4 separate headings for "warp point" as a consequence.

Some items differ based on the game you are looking at (SE3, SE4, SF, etc). Do you think it would be better to have it all on the same page and have headings?

Hmm...maybe I'm using it differently than everyone else. I would go to the main page, select the version of space empires, than go from there. If its important for people to start at the main page, enter a search topic, and select the correct entry for them, even if it was SE2, then I guess the way it is now is how it has to be.

Naw, I don't think I'd like to read a page with entries for SE2, SE3, SE4, Starfury, SE5. That would be a bit much.

Maybe someone can figure out something a little less intrusive than working "for ..." into each title. Inigma has already organized each entry, by categories. It even took Wikipedia a while to get around to it.
