Default OT: London Attacked

Early this morning several bombs rocked London's mass transit system, their version of the subway suffered several explosions on several trains and a double decker bus was blown apart.

Just figured I'd post this here in case you folks look here before you watch the news.

My wife is currently frantically phoning and emailing everyone she knows in the capital.

I told her there are 10 million ppl in London, and so far 2 confirmed fatalities...

(BTW, if I was inclined at the moment, I'd argue that the subway is actually New York's version of London's Underground. The Underground is over a hundred years old, you know, and was the first of it's kind in the world: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground)

No, old ironwhiskers lives up near Manchester, which is several hours away by car or train. However, he is NOT a Mancunian, and will severely reprimand anyone who suggests that he is.

I hope the UK can respond to this crisis with the sense and justice we are usually creditted with- ie without passing any more draconian laws, without invading random countries or victimising any particular racial or religious groups.

Let's not turn this into one of those Dogscoff that was a cruel jab and totally unnecessary especially considering the scales involved in death tolls.

We should just leave it that this is a tragedy and not turn this into anything STUPID.

It wasn't a jab at all. It's how I feel.

And I feel the Irish would seriously argue against your "fair and just" line.....

Very disturbing news this morning. This side of the pond offers our condolences.

There have been many instances in the troubles where the British army and/or police have disgraced themselves, but on the whole, people suspected of violence or terrorism in Northern Ireland can expect their human rights to be respected throughout their trial and (if found guilty) punishment.

Whether or not abuses of human rights are institutionalised in those British authorities dealing with the troubles is a question I'm not equipped to answer (and I doubt anyone here is) but I'd like to believe that they are not. In any case, those abuses certainly aren't been legislated into the institution - or at least they weren't until Blair passed his 'UK mini-Patriot Act' earlier this year.
