Default can you cast wither bones when your own undead are in melee ?

does the battle ai override it or can you cast wither bones into meeleeing troops ?

because this way you would damage both your own and the enemies undeads .
so does this work or not ?

Yes, the AI has no objections to inflicting friendly fire if you tell it to do so. In fact, it'll even preferentially target your own troops sometimes, since it isn't aware of deep and insightful tactics like "leading the target" or "missing to hit". Thus, it will aim directly at the target, and, naturally, miss and hit something else, probably something of yours.

So what? You're Ermor. What do you care if you cremate some of your troops. There's plenty more where they came from ...

uhm to have a chance i need 2 armies with a shield of about 1500 undeads each . mictlan can throw 500 vampires each turn on me . so if i lose each attack more than 100-200 undeads my valuable mages may be in danger .
i have to devastate his blood grounds so i need to keep both armies about 20 turns alive to succeed

Some ideas...
Staff of Storms grounds the vampires, so you can cast Wither bones once or twice safely. You probably won't have air magic though.

Banefire Archers could work, but would be expensive chaff if the vampires get to them. Risky.

If the commanders of that army are not undead you could try casting something that has no effect on undead. Quess who will be targeted...

If you've high research I'd Stygian Path an entire army into his capitol.

Take over Immortality ...

yeah i have a staff of storm for this purpose .
i think mainly i will have to fight against 500-1000 vampires leaded by vampire lords
war will start unfortunately in about 5-10 turns because the opponent between us has to be killed first . mictlan has reached blood 8 this turn so he is most likely already beginning with chainsummoning vampire hordes

"i think mainly i will have to fight against 500-1000 vampires leaded by vampire lords "

That is a very large number.

"war will start unfortunately in about 5-10 turns because the opponent between us has to be killed first "

No I don't

"mictlan has reached blood 8 this turn so he is most likely already beginning with chainsummoning vampire hordes "

Vamps are blood 7 so there may be lots already - where does he get his death from?

You are probably talking about a different game anyway.

1.-Dominion push him with temples: make sure his vampires fight outside home turf so that you do not face them multiple times.

2.-Undead mastery + Control the dead: turn his vampires into _your_ vampires (you do have a high Death skill pretender, right?)

3.-Vampire troopers have poor morale & no protection, capitalize on these if you can.
