Eternal Struggle MP Game - Tournament Idea
What do you guys think of this as an idea for a tournament game? Ideally it would be cool if there were some prizes for this as it would be quite a time investment.
The scoring system should create some interesting diplomatic possiblities. Getting 2nd or 3rd place in a game isn't much worse than 1st.
Even without prizes do you think their would be much interest in something like this?
------------------------------------------------
Eternal Struggle
It was decreed that many gods will via for dominion of the common worlds. When the next cycle comes each god receives elements of power based upon their dominance.
When the end of time draws near, the Gods will use these elements in an attempt to reach the next plane of existence. Those that succeed continue their eternal quest for survival. Those who fail will fall into the chaos to be lost forever.
Rules:
24 players:
6 players per game. 4 Games played simultaneously. 4 Rounds of game. With the possibility of a final round.
You receive points based on how long you survived within the game.
The Last god standing receives 6 points, 2nd gets 5, 3rd gets 4... and the first one to go only gets 1 point.
After each round the players of the next game will be grouped by the total amount of points they currently have. The top six players will be in the same game, next 6 in the 2nd, and so on.
2nd round example based off first round score:
Game 1: 6,6,6,6,5,5
Game 2: 5,5,4,4,4,4
Game 3: 3,3,3,3,2,2
Game 4: 2,2,1,1,1,1
Nation selection is based on alphabetical order for the first round. For each subsequent round the person with the fewest points in the group gets first nation choice, and the person with most points gets Last nation choice. Ties are decided by reverse alphabetical order.
Then the top six scores are ranked to determine the overall winners. Any ties will be decided by an additional small game between each tieholder.
For example if the final scores were
Player A - 20 points
Player B - 18 points
Player C - 18 points
Player D - 15 points
Player E - 15 points
Player F - 15 points
A has first place
B & C will duel for 2nd and 3rd place.
D,E & F will duel for 4th to 6th place.
Map settings:
Open for ideas.
Turn times would be 48 hours, but try not to consistently be one of the Last people to submit your turn.
House rule:
All game communication should be in game or take place on a public forum. One thread for each running game. No out of game private discussions.

Re: Eternal Struggle MP Game - Tournament Idea
I believe this is a very nice idea, because take in considerations many aspects of Dom2 that aren't considered on 1vs1 games.
And these are trade and diplomacy.
The problem of the house rule is that none can control about it ... so I believe it's an house rule very weak, based only on the "honour" of the gamers.

I'd suggest a wrap around map, so everyone is in the middle of others, while maps like Aran could be not very well suited for the ppl starting in the middle of the map.
If the players are 6, a map with 120-150 provinces should suit well.

Re: Eternal Struggle MP Game - Tournament Idea
Sounds like a good idea.
*edit* The tournament I mean, not sure about Ringworld as a map. A bit unconventional.

Re: Eternal Struggle MP Game - Tournament Idea
I like that idea. The timetable suits me very much, too.
I also like the Houserule about in-game btw public communications, and I for one think that if someone really wants to cheat, he'll cheat anyway. *shrug* I got no problems loosing against a cheater, especially if its not even about prizes.
I'd join. I like the points-system, if I understood it correctly.

Re: Eternal Struggle MP Game - Tournament Idea
Thanks Cohen.
I was thinking this would just be a starting point for a game. I'm open to all suggestions and tweaks. I'd like map and game settings ideas as well. I'm thinking something fairly small, maybe even tight, to encourage quicker more viscous games.
I wasn't sure about the house rule. Ideally I would like it if every was anonymous in each game. But I didn't think that was that feasible.
I think another neat (but unenforceable) idea would be to only allow the forum as a means of communication. It would be pretty cool to have all diplomacy available as a public record.
