Easy. You just haven't loaded any population into your colony ship first. You can do this one of two ways:

1) Click on the "colonize" command button (upper left) and then click on the planet you wish to colonize. This will automatically load population into the ship before it leaves the planet to colonize.

2) Click on the "Transfer Cargo" button and manually load up as much or as little population as you wish. You can then move to the planet and give the colonize command.

Also, you might try the tutorial, it covers this pretty well.

This is metioned in the trouble shooting on the Malfor Mecinations page but heres a breif run down.

If you just move a colany ship without using the colinize order, the ship just moves and doesn't gather the usual 4M people. You can load people up on transports and populate the planets you've already taken over, you should do this anyway it speeds the growth of the colany.

One other thing I forgot to mention, build a population transport, load up some pop. and then unload them on the empty worlds you've already colonized. Then you'll be in business.

You might want to also put a cargo container on your colonizer that way you start with 34M people up to 54M at level III cargo component. Otherwise if you don't want to do that throw a supply crate on there and increase your range. I hate leaving empty spaces on ships .
