I have seen them increase from one turn to another by as much as 20, with indies set at 5 and 7. I have also seen the strength vary even when left at the default of 3. The higher you set the indy level the greater the chance for increases, is what I've observed, and some of those increases can be shockingly large.

One thing that can happen is that an independent commander can receive a Soul Contract as a random item. That's only likely to happen with a high indepedent strength, but it's been seen.

The percieved increase is either from inaccurate scout reports or soul contracts, indies do not increase, and any losses they incur are permanent.

Scout reports can be off by 50% downwards and 100% upwards.

Not to argue, just curious, but if indy strength really doesn't change (except via soul contracts) then where do the indies come from that occasionally will attack my borders (it's not an event that shows up in Messages)? If they came from the province(s) just across from me, then those provinces should show reduced strengths afterwards, shouldn't they?

Reason I ask is that the numbers I have seen do not jive with the -50%/+100% figure you just gave.

Indies are stationary. I expect what you are talking about is that you have just captured an enemy province, then his event, which is generated before you take posession of the province, will affect you.

So Indies never attack you unless driven by an event. And if I see a huge mass of indies next door, where there wasn't such a large mass before, I need not worry about them. Interesting.

Sometimes Indies attacks driven by other Pretenders spells.
