BEST UNIT and ITEM combo-z
Here's two of mine:
Take a black hawk commander from that spell 'call of winds' and give him one of those exploding amulets.
have him attack enemy archers and watch 5 or so fall dead... if you're lucky you'll take a commander too.
an assassin with:
sandals of the crane (blinking around on map)
bottle of living water (water elemental)
ethereal crossbow (soul slay)
luck charm (luck... just in case)

Re: BEST UNIT and ITEM combo-z
I love giving scouts bows of war and eyes of aiming, really saves on upkeep instead of normal archers.

Re: BEST UNIT and ITEM combo-z
The scout bow of war is a nice tatic. Not so useful but very entertaining was my super fire bola warrior I made once. It was a harbringer with 2 fire bolas, boots of quickness, girdle of strength and bear talisman. Not so practical but still really entertaining to have 4 attacks/round at pretty good range, accuracy, and damage that also imprison in flame. And one handed ranged weapons just tempt me. Although the time I gave a quicknessed nataraja 2 bows of war was good too...52 arrows a turn.
And on a more practical note I love stocking mound kings with 2 fever fetishes each.
