The Combat Pretender Learning Curve
With Thy Combat Pretender, Thou Shalt Not-
-risk thy pretender in any combat you are not certain of winning.
-storm a castle, ever, with thy pretender... ever!
-take thy pretender and thy army and 'guess' on a province to attack on turn one.
-forget to give thy pretender appropriate items and bodyguards.
-give thy pretender one point in astral magic.
And on the sixth game, Ulm triumphed.

Um...
Doesn't the commander rout if it is just him and bodyguards, and a bodyguard dies? I can't remember...

I've had that happen. Combat pretenders should have armies with them, not just bodyguards. Sorry I wasn't clearer. I've just had the fun effect of losing a pretender to an assasination attempt(lucky hit, but still...) - now I assign bodyguards.

This has been my experiance also. It is not that you always need accompanying amries with combat pretenders but there are times you do and you counld't have realistically known in advance - pesky mages with indies for example.
The easiest combat pretender to use, that I have tried, is the Prince of Death with death9 playing C'tis. The billowing clouds of terror that flow forth devestate indies and give your expansion a huge boost. The ability to fly means that the PoD can jump about to where he is needed so that he fights a battle each turn and can be transfered to where he is needed most. Fast and deadly and usable from t.2.
Cheers

Humm,..
Good advices, but IMHO Ulm should have won earlier WITHOUT a combat pretender

Re: The Combat Pretender Learning Curve
Thou shalt attack in ever increasing circles.
To provide resources for your castles.
To make it easy to return every 10 rounds for upgrades (equip, gems).
To make it easy for your elite units to reach you and reinforce your army.
And to bring you back into strong dominion frequently to stock up on hit points.

LOL - mebbe, but I'm a n00b. Once I figured it all out Ulm triumphed in 51 turns on a 60 province map with three AI opponents (Abysia, Man, Marignon) set at easy. So I'm happy. Now on to Caelum and a Research Pretender!
Gandalf,
Oh Yeah!
