Unique Techs, worthless?
Well, so far I've seen the Massive Engine, and Massive Shield weapons. Why would you use these? 2000 cost, fire once per combat, and they weigh a heap. Even with a religious talisman so you never miss, that's only one target per combat. Just doesn't seem worth the cost/weight/risk to me.
So far the Neural net is the only useful one I've seen.
Opinions?

Re: Unique Techs, worthless?
I think the only useful one is Massive Planetary Shield Generator, it generates 2000 points for the planet(and its the only facility that allows you to get shields for the planet), the only down side is the cost and the build time.(It took my Homeworld over 2 years to build it)
As for Neural Net, I didn't get that one yet.

Re: Unique Techs, worthless?
Yes, the Neural net is the only really unique tech in those "special" techs that come from ruins. I'm inclined to move it into the Psychic racial tech field anyway, as it seems to fit perfectly with that ability. Psychic and Temporal need some extra things to make them as worthwhile as Organic and Crystalline. I've changed the massive shield depleter and ionic disperser to fire every TEN combat rounds so you do get more than one use per combat. Otherwise, the standard Versions are much better deals. Even as it is maybe I should reduce the fire delay even more... hmm.
You can invent new "unique" techs, of course. I have invented several but I keep deciding to make them regular techs so I can use them when I want to instead of having to wait on luck.

Re: Unique Techs, worthless?
I agree, the guns are useless and the shield facility is way to expensive to be practical to build. In the time it takes to build that facility I can build alot of weapon platforms with shilds and wepons and have more damage soak capability and I can fire back and I save a facility space.
Never used the neural net but I can see it's use. Does the ship with the highest experience also have the net for the low exp ship with the net to get the exp boost?

Re: Unique Techs, worthless?
One time, I got the massive weapons very early in the game. They were much better than anything else I had, so I used them.

Re: Unique Techs, worthless?
Actually early in the game I think they are even worse.. reason is because of the cost. 2000 minerals is over 2/3 the cost of an early ship. And you get one shot, and 100kt space.

Re: Unique Techs, worthless?
I use the planet shield on thos planets that otherwise do not have the storage capacity to house a large number of units. Usually I put them on until I get atmosphere coVersion, then swap out for an atmosphere plant.
cost a bunch though, hehe, maybe that why I am almost always running out of stuff, eh?
