OT: Anyone here know about scotland?
I have to do a report on a poem written by a scottish poet, Liz Lochead. I think to understand the poem I need to know a little bit about the educational system there. Anyone familier with it and can answer some questions?

Re: OT: Anyone here know about scotland?
i live about as far from scotland as possible without leaving the UK, but I think their educational system is - or at least was until quite recently- much the same as in the UK.
I'll happily try to help if I can.

I imagine i can help, unlike Dogscoff i live extremely close to the scottish border, under 15 miles or so i'd say.
I'm not quite sure what poem you mean, maybe you could post it here so i could have an idea.
Mainly scotlands education system is pretty simmilar to the english one, although there seems to be a lot more local and rural schools in scotland.

Re: OT: Anyone here know about scotland?
What I'm trying to find out isn't really about the poem so much, as about the educational system in Scotland in the 60's when she was growing up. I understand there are some differences to what I'm used to here in America. She refers to "high school" in her poem, but it doesn't sounds like what I think of as high school. More like a private school or something? What I have found out is there is primary school up to about age 12 and secondary school up to about age 14 or so? Does that sound right? And mostly only students with money and were planning on going to university went on beyond that cause the post secondary education was a private school that cost tuition and had uniforms. Does that sound right? Maybe not still, but in the 60's? And girls didn't usually go beyond secondary school? If any of you could describe the typical amount of school kids go through that might help.

Re: OT: Anyone here know about scotland?
I beleive the Scottish Education system is much like Australia in the regards you seem to be talking about.
Pre-School or Prep (Prep in sometimes held at the Primary School or is in my State)
Primary School - First 6 years of Schooling.
High School - Next 6 years. (Now sometimes called Secondary College) Finishing at 17-18 years of age.
After that is University, College or just work depending on your choice.
