Default OT: 3D File viewer

Hi there,

I have been trying to find a good 3D file viewer. I was wondering if any of you know a good 3D file viewer that can display .x files? Preferably a freeware one. If you know one for .3ds too that would also be good.

Thanks in advance for any help finding a viewer.

Cheers!

It seems like I have seen some discussed in Renderosity, David. If you aren't a member (free) of Renderosity, you should join. It's the biggest graphics site in the world (possibly) with around 1500 people Online most of the time. Lots of forums (in a format I seem to prefer over the typical UBB forums).

Check it out if you haven't already done so.

Well, so far I have found a fairly good .3ds and .obj file viewer. (called 3D Photo Browser lite) I'm still looking for a good .x file viewer.

Just thought I'd keep you posted.

Cheers!

There was one I used for a while that I downloaded as shareware off of www.download.com I honestly do not recall the name, but if you do a search for 3d viewing or X file viewer, or something like that you might hit paid dirt. Good luck.

LINK to a search I did there. I did a search for x file viewers and this was the page it gave me.

Thanks for the link, it didn't help, but thanks anyway. I have taken a break from searching for a good .x file viewer. it seems like everything I find are full fledged 3d modelers that can load .x files and cost hundreds of dollars. I don't have the funds to spend that kind of money on a 3d modeler just to be able to view .x files.

Overkill is the word that comes to mind.

anyway, if I do end up getting a 3d package that can read and view .x files etc it will probably be DarkBAsic and it's family of 3d tools that come in a bundled package. that way I'll be able to at least have some fun coding as well as fooling around with models.

Cheers!

David, try DirectX 9.0b SDK. It has to include Mesh Viewer (in the Extras or Tools folder) disigned to view .x file format. I know nothing about the quality of this but at least it's free.

Edit: oops forgot link http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Or better this: JTEdit http://www.jtgame.com/jtedit/jteditmain.html
===quote===
DirectX .x skinned mesh and frame-based formats, ASCII and binary.
Autodesk .3ds format plug-in, includes animation support.
Blitz3D format plug-in, full support.
JTGame stream and specialized ASCII and binary formats.
All supported formats are natively readable/writable via standard Open/Save As dialogs.
====quote====

It's free and smaller than DX SDK (5MB).

Thanks for the links Aiken. I'm downloading them both as I type this. I'll check out the JTEdit first and if it is good enough I'll forgo installing the dx90bSDK until a much later date.

I wonder why the search engines I used never pointed me to the JTEdit page. I guess Teoma, google and altavista haven't taken a snapshot of the web in that neck of the woods.

Oh well, thanks again for the links.

Cheers!
