How to gift units?

Does the feature to gift units to another race work? When I go to the "Give Gift" window, there is a button for "units" but when I click it, the list is blank and none of my satellites or other units appear in the window. Is there a way to get this to work or it this function unsupported?

I think it is unsupported. You need to gift a transport carrying the units.

Does the AI still do nothing with gifted ships?? Last time I gifted ships to the AI they just sat at my planet for about 30 turns till they disappeared (probally got 'lost' to pay the AI's bills....)...
