Refit idea
I had a thought... How about if ships were refitted like facilities - that is, it took a spaceyard to refit them, and the resources were not all consumed at once but over the amount of time it takes to do the refit, which would be the resource cost of the refit divided by the repair capacity of the spaceyard... Just a thought...
Edit: That way, refitting ships with only a few but expensive components (like SM and colonizers) would take a time commensurate with their build time, and you wouldn't have to worry about "running your economy into a hole" by refitting a bunch of ships at once because the drain would be only as much as building new ships would be.
