Can't you do a relatively cheap, fragile planet buster tech that only fits on a starbase ?
Unfortunetaly Stellar Manip requires a movement point to work, and bases don't have any movement points.

A scorched earth ability would be nice/logical, HOWEVER, this would have to be balanced within the game or it knocks the games balance out of wack. You would have to come up with a counter reaction for the employment of said weapon. Possible ideas (opinions & ideas only)

1. Certain race populations would have negative reaction if their race employed said weaponn where happiness would go down with each application. This would not fit all races tho

2. This would reduce the AI players attitude towards you for every say 2 planets bombed to the point war could break out

3. AI players would break all treaties with the bombing player after a certain random number of planets is bombed

4. Some AI players would go to immediate war if implemented, with harder chance at obtaining a treaty after the outbreak

5. Harder to obtain treaties or certain types of treaties with AI players.

6. In addition, certain races (xenophobic) would jubuliantly employ this weapon and the population would become happier as they are fullfilling the prime directive of extermination of all other races.

Just some ideas mac

mac,
I like your idea about Population responding to such behavior. I would love to see it occure. It should also apply if you glass a planet.

Start Dream:
A follow up idea for the "Self Destruct Facility / atribute" on a planet.
The concept is:
In the event of planet capture There is a Facility that is "Cloaked"
This Facility will destroy the planet and all ships in orbit.
The device could have a timing mechanism so it waits 5 months
Or a Remote activation device
Locating it could be an Intel project or an Advanced Scanner
Countering it could be an Intel Project or a Facilty of some sort
End Dream

Unfortunately this would require toooo much hard code. Oh well, it is a nice dream.

and here is a more fatalist take on the same topic, the following article proposes that the solid core is shrinking, and thus could bring about THE END OF THE WORLD. Lots of it sounds reasonable, but i dont think the world will be melting down anytime soon. check it out:

The first site looks pretty good.
It has references, no glaring errors or psych tricks, and is not pushing a point of view.
Other positive indicators are that it is longwinded and dosen't make "absolute Certainty" conclusions.

The site at the second link there dosen't look very believable at all.

Quote:
the solid core of our planet could never be smaller or lighter than a certain minimum, otherwise the core would not be able to remain in the center of the planet.
Smaller or lighter.
That preys on the common sense that tells you something bigger is heavier, and heavier things sink.
However, the important bit here is DENSITY. If the core were both smaller and lighter, it could still be the same density, and end up at the center.
Dunking ever smaller rocks and pebbles into water will not get you one that floats!

Quote:
Since the inner core could have only been larger and heavier in the past than it is today - it cannot be the result of any "crystallization". This simple conclusion has astonishing consequences.
Now they're just making things up, based very loosely on the above, and faulty argument.

Quote:
The main consequence of the above is that all heat generated inside Earth is of radionic origin.
This is suspect, too. It may be an exaggeration for imagery purposes, but that's still out of character.

Quote:
Life on Earth is possible only because of the efficient cooling of this reactor - a process that is controlled primarily by the atmosphere.
Seriously? I guess the 3000 kilometer blanket of rock/magma all around the core has no effect on it then.
However, by this point, the article should have worn down your will to resist, and you wouldn't notice it.

ETC...

.................

This has been a test of the Emergency Skeptic System...
had this been a real emergency, there would be people screaming in the streets, and maybe a stock market crash as well

I would like to be able to use a Scorched Earth with the Abandon Planet option.
Wait, not Scorched Earth, "Blow Planet to Bits" option.
I concede it is not "realistict" but that is what science fiction is for

it would have to go into 5, but its a good idea.

i think there should be two things, the ability to attack (with value damagers, like RAD bombs) or plague unpopulated planets. this also leaves Lasting effects for plagues, so you cant just recolonize after your people die.

second, the ability for evacuating populations to do these things, or leave behind booby traps.

Right now I would not mind using Abandon Planet, (thus loosing my population) and be able to leave behind a significant booby trap.
I like to play a race that will never allow theselves be slaves and I don't feel as a leader I should let them be massacred.
