C\'mon experts, EXACTLY what is Env. Res. ?
I'm still looking for a basic definition of what the Environmental Resistance [Tolerance] trait does for your race. Creating a new race is always fun and it is important to understand where to put your points.
So, does this trait:
a) - increase growth rate on all planets? If so, would it give a different yield if a planet was optimal or harsh? I would think growth rate was already specified by Reproduction.
b) - increase happiness levels on all planets? .. same yield question as a) .. I would think this was already covered by Happiness.
c) - something I can't think of?
It doesn't seem to effect the population cap or remove the need for domes. So, if its not increasing happiness, or growth rate, or maximum population ... then what is it doing?
I apologize if this is a simple question, but I just don't get it.
There my hardy colonists are, on their newly colonized harsh world, and they wonder, "What is the use for this trait?"

Re: C\'mon experts, EXACTLY what is Env. Res. ?
As far as I have been able to gather, it reduces the effect of bad conditions on your race's reproduction and happiness. I haven't tried to test it, but I think you could create a couple of otherwise identical races, one with high E.R. and the other with none, and then try the different populations on a planet with harsh conditions. Dunno exactly how you'd get both races under control of one player quickly so you could do your test. Make two player empires, and have the one surrender to the other as soon as they met?

Play a hotseat game with no AI races. Run both yourself.

I've colonized unpleasant worlds and seen my populations drop to zero because they are dying. So it affects the ability to live (and reproduce) under certain planetary conditions.

Uh, an unpleasant world will not kill your people off, but a plague will. You might want to watch a little closer next time to save your people.
But as far as I can tell, env. res. only affects population happiness and possibly reproduction. I think it really only affects reproduction by affecting population happiness though.

Re: C\'mon experts, EXACTLY what is Env. Res. ?
Haven't seen this answered yet, so I thought I'd weigh in on the matter.
From what I've seen so far, Env. Resis. only affect population growth. Every 10 points gets you 2% in pop growth, regardless of happiness or planet conditions.
I would think at the very least it should affect how much of a decrease to your max growth you get if the planet conditions aren't optimal, but that just isn't the case.
If anyone else has found something env. res. does besides the reproduction modifier, I'd love to know...

This is *sorta* on this topic.
Have you looked at the settings.txt file around the place where it gives the population bonus cutoffs. I forget the name of the setting. It goes something like: Minimum population to operate facility, and it is set to 50. But clearly this isn't implemented. I have had huge planets with 25 facilities being operated by less than 100 million colonists. Does anyone know anything about that? I think it would really add to the game if it were implemented.
