As I recall, it was simply done with a mind toward saving some for later. I often turn off guns with HE, and had not previously noticed that smoke was different - but it is, and that's perfectly fine by me.

Re the bonus question on "last smoke point" in my 7:41 / 8:31 add-ons, if it is what it is that's fine too - it just left a hole in my screen, and I know what to expect next time!
