Re-install and missing icons
I have tried multiple times to delete my older installs and doing a complete re-install, using the Cold War Mod. Everytime I have deleted the directories, I do a search and nothing is left. However, when I do my re-install and begin putting the patches 2.0-5.0, I end up loosing icons. I then install the Cold War mod and they ar still missing. Has anyone else encountered this? I seem to be the only one that encounters this everytime. I am running Windows7 64 bit, if that helps. Thanks in advance.
BTW, I know it's not the mod, but rather something Windows wants to prohibit, I guess. Anyway, recommendations greatly accepted.

Re: Re-install and missing icons
Windows 7 can do strange things, apparently, with your file structure (to include the 'program files' hierarchy). It can squirrel things away under your user folder, depending on how you have set up permissions or who you are logged in as.
That's a summary of what I have gleaned about it - as I have not bothered to downgrade from XP to windows 7 yet.
Anyway - try the following:
Plan A - make a new folder under the C: drive that is outside the managed folders that windows 7 tries to impose it's weird ideas upon. Call it say c:\games\WinSPMBT\. Now install the game and all the patches to that folder(use the navigation tool in the installers). Install WinSPWW2 to another folder under games, and ditto for any other legacy game that gets messed up by Windows 7/Vista file mangling.
Or - plan B - log in as the administrator account on your Windows 7 PC and install as the super-user. That might bypass the Windows 7 problem with trying to squirrel files under a 'user' folder structure instead of the \program files\etc hierarchy?. You would probably have to change to the admin user to install PBEM games though (or your Windows 7 may squirrel the PBEM files under your user directory once again). (Hint - use the search feature to look for .shp files to see where it has actually put stuff - not many other programs use that extension!).
Plan B would require you to learn how the Windows 7 user management system works. Plan A has been reported as a working solution - i.e. bypass it completely!.
Cheers
Andy

Re: Re-install and missing icons
Andy, thanks a million! It worked like a charm to install under games. A pity I had to loose all of my mods in Mobhack though to get it to work properly.

Re: Re-install and missing icons
You may not have "lost" them . Do a seach for the OOB's you altered and you may find them tucked away someplace you'd never expect them to be

They are there used to know the folder it hijacks stuff to, as said do a search that should find them otherwise try typing lost files on Win7 or some such in google or ask The Geek

Re: Re-install and missing icons
The fix that worked great was to install under games and not program files, as the default. It works great now and I have no issues, aside from re-creating some mods to MOBHACK, but what the heck, have nothing but time. Thanks all for your help.

Re: Re-install and missing icons
I know that they are on your hard drive already hidden by the operating system they were NOT uninstalled.
Do a sysem search for .obf or ObatXXX.obf
Seem to remember its in your Users Folder possibly under Postgres but dodgy memory.
Normal setup would suggest you try searching C:\Users first then the whole drive if it does not find them

Re: Re-install and missing icons
Scrap that found a note on my laptop about
folder will be C:\Users\Virtual Store\ then whatever its called the folder most likely.
Not quite that simple though may chuck other folders in the path Virtual Store is what you want it will be in a folder in there.
