In windows you can use ALT+PRTSCRN and then paste into an image editing program.

And with linux (ubuntu for example), printscreen alone will do the trick.
I wonder what software can be used to record a battle, though.

Snapz pro is a very good app for mac osx that can take screenshots and make video/audio recordings of anything on the screen. Can also save it in most formats.

Exellent for making gameplay videos or in my case instruction tutorial films for all kinds of software.
