You are not wrong. If you try to hunt an astral mage of any level he will cut your astral cord. If you try to hunt a province where there are both astral and non-astral mages and astral mages are level 1 or 2, you have a chance of killing a non-astral mage.

Edi, You're missing the point, if you could mind hunt it you couldn't kill it because of its hit points, I just find that interesting.

That is true. I do not dispute this point. E.g. mod sphinx to have no astral but fire magic instead and then it does become a question of requiring astral mages as bodyguards to prevent death by mindhunt, or in this case multiple mindhunts.

My initial reaction was to a suggestion of mindhunting something that automatically has astral magic. That sort of things kind of stick out to me. I would never even have made the comment because without modding, it is absolutely irrelevant to a real in-game scenario.

Yeh, I totally forgot that Sphinxes have base S3. Good catch.

False.
Well I did test it in SP, but apparently not extensively enough. You are right as always. You can kill an S1 or S2 mage via mind hunt. Although it bothers me - how can he not discover that astral cord when you're attacking him?

Also boosters help in detecting mind hunters. I remember someone asking that some time ago.

You could imagine astral probes and attacks as a bit like trying to sneak into someone's house. The better the homeowner is at astral magic, the better he can equip his house with intruder alarms, CCTV, guard dogs and so on. So a weak astral mage may only realise there's an astral assassin in his house when he's just woken up with his metaphorical throat already cut.

I stubbed my metaphorical toe once and it hurt like all getout. I can't begin to imagine what having your metaphorical throat cut feels like.
