Victory Points?
How exactly do Victory Points work for winning purposes?
The manual describes how it helps spread Dominion, but I haven't found anything on how it helps winning the game, ie. do you win the moment you control all provinces containing a VP or how?
And how are Cumulative VP condistions different from regular VP conditions?
(The reason I ask is that we've recently started a game on the Llamaserver using the "Create new game" server interface, and for some reason the server added Victory Points on the map, although that options wasn't chosen. Now we need to figure out if we want to play on )

Re: Victory Points?
VPs only matter for winning if the victory condition has been set to VPs. Then it is specified how many you need to win, e.g. if there is 1 VP per capital, 17 nations and you need 10 or 11 to win would be one possibility. If other provinces than capitals had VPs, there would be more variety.
Cumulative VPs are tallied every summer and added to the total. So again with 1 VP per capital, each nation gets 1 VP every summer. If someone conquers another capital, then they get 2 VPs every summer that they hold it.

Re: Victory Points?
Ok, so the very momenet any player holds the required number of VP's the game ends.
Is there any way to check the victory requirements in-game? As I wrote the server put VP on the map without my knowledge, so I have no idea what the conditions are

If score graphs are turned on, there will be a grey-white horizontal line at the level of the requirement on the relevant graph.
If score graphs are off, I don't know of any way to check.

Re: Victory Points?
I find victory points are useful in SP large maps, 300+ provinces. They allow you to shorten the game duration. The turn times are too long for my liking when I have 100+ provinces, thus I get bored and start a new game without achieving, or even coming close to, standard victory conditions. So by setting up victory points I can achieve a win and not have another incomplete save game sitting in my directory for 3 to 6 months before I delete it.
The AI does not seem to recognize victory points as a goal, so I don't set VP provinces other than capitals anymore.
That said, I still usually quit before VP conditions anyway. I find that when I put in 2 hours playing and only get 2 turns accomplished it is "Start New Game" time.
But VP is still better than standard victory conditions on large maps.

Re: Victory Points?
Most likely there is no Victory Point condition in the game you're in. For reasons that are unclear starting a MP game often puts Victory provinces on the map even when no Victory condition was chosen.
These will have no effect other than the bit of Dominion boost.
As suggested above, if graphs are on there will be a Victory graph if there is a Victory condition. There's also a game options view somewhere. That might show you. I can't remember.

Re: Victory Points?
The number of victory points is listed under "temple and dominion statistics" (keyboard shortcut = o).
Since every VP spreads dominion as a temple with dom 5 evry VP owned will show up as Victory points 5 under conversion rates. VIctory points 5 = 1 VP, Victory points 10 = 2VP and so on.
Would have been easier if it just said the number of VPs owned but it's simple enough to calculate the number of VPs as it is.

Really? I've found quite the opposite: that the AI is good at gunning for VP provinces. Although I do favor "capitals as VP" victory conditions, partly because it does encourage the AI to aim for your capital.
Usually, I find that "half the number of world VP, +/- 1" makes for the correct amount to end the game at about the right time.
