Does shield Defense protect you from trample?

The manual states "units have to take a Defense - (fatigue/10) check against 10" to reduce trample damage to 1. But is shield Defense taken into consideration in this calculation? Because it shouldn't be unless done for some kind of weird and unrealistic balance consideration.

Scenario A:
An elephant charges at you. You get out of the way. You survive with a few scratches and bruises.

Scenario B:
An elephant charges at you. You block it with your shield and hope for the best?

I think shield is already not counted.

Not sure, but elephants don't seem to have difficulties against tower shielded infantry.

I would consider shield defense modifiers as valid to apply, but not the block/parry. Just imagine it not as stopping the elephant, but as allowing the shield bearer to push away and off to the side of the charging beast.

Sheild defense modifiers are almost universally negative. So that doesn't make sense.

Dodging a trampling is harder when you've got a heavy shield on you.
