Tactical combat and Gold
Malfador says that TCP/IP support is in SE IV Gold. I assume this means a faster way of doing essentially the same turn-based game? Or has it been implemented in such a way that you can play tactical combat in real time against another human. In which case, I would be well pleased!

TCP/IP games are in simultaneous move. So there is no tactical combat.

Ah - as I feared... Is there any way to do tactical combat against other humans? Hot seat play for example? Or is it just impossible?

But if it is already implemented in hotseat surely a similar implementation could be done for TCP/IP?! Come on Malfador...

"TCP/IP-hotseat" would not be feasible with more than two players, because everybody else would have to wait for two combattants to duke it out.
For two players, it would be a nice-to-have feature.
Somewhere on this forum there is a thread that deals with a SE4 Arena/Battleground idea for tactical combat only. Nice to have for a quick round of tactical combat with "one of the guys" during your lunchbreak .

I agree that for more than two players TCP/IP tactical might be a hassle. Though I would still offer it as an option - perhaps with the ability to watch the combat if you are an ally of one of the people in the combat?
What's Malfador's stated position on whether they will do TCP/IP tactical? Is it a "Version 5" or a "patch to 4 Gold" issue? Is it "one day" or "maybe" or "if there is enough demand"?

Derb I agree with you 100% It is a huge hole in this game. It should be an option.
That is why I hope they open source the game so we can add it ourselves.
I have noticed that 4x games like to keep away from tatical due to the time lenght involved. But this can be over come by allowing players to work on there systems etc... while combat occurs during the movement phase.
It should be an option and the players can decide if they want tatical combat. It would not bother me if Ships and combat did not play such a big role in the game and if the AI could handle my ships properly. But time and time again crap happens during combat and I just shake my head.
It like the game wishes to ignore that whole area.
Tatics, formation, Stragety, Ship classes with defined roles etc... Who cares in Sim games.
So you end up wasting space on mine layers point defence ships so they will attempt to do what they should. ( I.E. placing a missle on a transport so it will stay 16 squares away from the enemy when you select max range, or placing a DF weapon on a PD ships so it will close on the enemy and do its job )
If there not going to allow tatical combat they should allow players to script there combat so the computer will do what you wanted those ships to do in the first place.
As for the stated position i think it is 'not mentioned'
Mind you I just talk about it here with everyone and we would be in the minority.
