Weapon Platforms - Ground Attack

So what good are WP's during a Ground Attack? PD doesn't seem to do much of anything on them. Are there any weapons that can be put on them to fire at troops?

It's mostly useful in a passive role. I used to have PD on WP fire on troops in the Balance Mod, but it was far too effective against troops and fighters were becoming too effective for conquering planets, so I dropped troops from being a valid target for ground PD.

Ah, I thought the simulator wasn't working right as I thought the PD's were susposed to fire on ground troops.
