I have good news and bad news
OK I have figured out a work-around for the problem on my servers that popped up with the latest patches. I havent figured out why, but I do have a work around. For now, linux servers might want to avoid using dom3 as the user that runs games. Having too many dom3 in the paths might confising it.
Anyway...
Good News
I will be re-opening both servers for new games. Keep an eye on http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/blitz_chk.cgi later today or early tomorrow for some new games. And the return of the demo_only game. I might also be progressing toward offering more mid-sized games (10-player) and maybe even a large one (all nations of an era on a large map).
Bad News
In order to shift the games I will have to take them down and restart them as the new user. I will try to make it as quick a switch as possible so its down only a minute.

Re: I have good news and bad news
OK I have good news and I have bad news.
Good News
all games on game.dom3minions.com have successfully been shifted to run under the user domgames. I have also successfully run the create-game script as that user (there is now some new games open).
Bad News
Moving the games made all of the files the same date. So the blitz_chk.cgi is not going to show who has turns until the games do the next host. And, because of the restart, all of them have restarted their counter on that hosting.

Re: I have good news and bad news
Another game is open.
I can run about a dozen but dont expect to see them all at once. For one thing, some are not public games. And, Ive learned not to open all of the game slots at the same time. When I do that then some people join all the games. The games close quickly, stay closed for a long time, and all bog down at the end from someone who cant handle all the games they are in.
I can see when someone is doing it (by watching IP numbers) but I havent decided to try and enforce anything on it. I cant really knock the desire to try all the nations in MP combat. Ive done it.
By opening the games one at a time I hope to avoid too big a gap between games being available for people.

Re: I have good news and bad news
How about some dedicated slots for Blitz games, which will get reset 48 hours after starting? Unless you already have something like that...

Re: I have good news and bad news
Thats a good idea. People who can host but not leave their machines on all the time tend to cover that. Mosly happening in the IRC channel.
Full time servers that are stable seem rare so Id rather fill that need.
Doing alot of PbEM (play by email) games would allow for many more games to be run. At some point down the road I might automate that to the point that it doesnt seem like alot of work (if someone else doesnt get it licked first)
