i think the order depends on the order in which they were recruited, at least that's how it seems to me

Maybe, but when playing the game there's no way to know when units have been recruited, so you can consider it as random

I have to admit I kinda like the long line of soldiers to get a feeling of how many there are, but it would still be nice if they could appear in a sorted order.

Appearing as Type x Number would make it tricky to examine wounds/experience etc.

I would be happy with the T command available by right click on the Leaders icon or a way to assign movement from the troop screen. When I have many leaders including some with the same name, I end up using a scratch pad to get the proper units to the right assignment.

As for AI the most effective work around to this problem so far is to simply use an American instead, they tend to put up a bit more of a fight than your average Artificial Idiot.
