Well, we did sign something called a Non-Disclosure Agreement in order to become beta testers. So, it seems a pretty reasonable conclusion that the developer(s) wanted to retain control of information about said development.
Like you, we do see the contradiction in making every participant sign a secrecy contract and then posting every minute stage of development to a public forum.
I guess it's just one of those mysterious properties of the Corporate Mindset -- even if it's a three-person corporation
-- to hold simultaneous and contradictory ideas: On the one hand wanting the testers not to reveal anything and on the other hand wanting to suck up to the public/market by being very friendly and informative about the process. Doublethink predates George Orwell by millenia, after all. He just invented the name, not the practice.
