I just tested one of my scenarios out. It is an advance on a remote airield in a hilly region. Anyway, the airfield had allready been bombed so the mission was supposed to be a mop-up, take and hold the airfield. I scattered a few grounded aircraft around it to add to the general picture of mayhem. I also decided to put one Hind immobilized at the end of one runway, just for good meassure. I just wanted it to be a sitting duck for commandos sneaking out of the jungle and lob a stachel charge in or something.
The thing was however that the Hind started launching HMG, rockets and ATGMs at my advancing AFV:s. A total surprise, but i opened up and shot back. I totally peppered that Hind with 40mm AC fire and 7.62 MGs. It took hit after hit, damage after damage, but nothing happened. A couple of rounds on a flying helo usually makes it flee head over heels but this one just sat there, the crew never bailed out. I finally called in two airstrikes on it. 4xClusters, alot of A/C and finally two 1000pd LGBs, right on target. Nothing...
It didnt turn but it didnt care, it fired its rockets and missiles in all directions, even backwards.
So my question is, do I really need the help of gravity to kill a helicopter?
