Question About Gondor
Call me a bit mad but I was wondering if anyone knew (or failing knowledge, a good guess will suffice) how many soldiers the Kingdom of Gondor has when the Lord Of The Rings cycle begins?
During the siege of Minas Tirith they come under attack from 200,000 Orcs and are heavilly outnumbered... so what kind of numbers did Gondor have? Does it say in the book? Otherwise what is a fair guess?
Cheers

Re: Question About Gondor
I'll take a look in my material when I can (that'd be tomorrow/Wednesday at the earliest) and see if I can find anyting. Hopefully, somebody else can bring you an answer faster than that.

Re: Question About Gondor
I would venture a guess at 100 to 1.

Re: Question About Gondor
Figures from The Atlas of Middle Earth, Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston (c ) by Karen Wynn Fonstad based on the books (not the film):
Gondor: 5.250 Men
Rohan: 6.000 Men
Mordor and Allies: 45.000 Men

Re: Question About Gondor
Top notch! thank you very much...
In the movie it seems like they've added a fair few bad guys then? dramatic liscence.
I'm suprised that Rohan have a bigger army than Gondor? I always felt that Gondor would have quite a large army? (not desputing your figures even an inch)
Cheers all

Re: Question About Gondor
Actually the Army of Gondor is bigger, but most of them are from the southern regions. These regions did not sent many troops (only 1/10) because of the danger posed by the Pirates. They defended the long coast of Gondor against the southern Allies of Mordor.

Re: Question About Gondor
I think it is safe to say that the movies, like the books, will be classics. They are afterall darn good movies.

Re: Question About Gondor
Here here about the movies, I loved all three (tho I still rate Fellowship as the best)
In wargaming terms I dont see how you can model the war of the ring acuratley and get the "historical" result. When we've played games based on the battle for helms deep Mordor always win
I created a rough scenario from helms deep for TWE and Mordor always won, even with really overpowered heros on the Fellowship side
