Re: resupply in space?
The drones were something that they hoped to add to the game at a later date. They aren't working yet.
Resupplying ships:
Take a look at the facilities you can build on your colonies. You should see one that says: Resupply Depot. When your ship passes through the square with one of your planets possessing a Resupply Depot, its supplies are maxed out.
If you go to Empire Options, you can turn on a flag which lets you see an 'R' next to planets with Resupply Depots. You can also send your ships to planets owned by someone with whom you have a military alliance to resupply.
2. All ships in a fleet share supplies. If you have a ship running low on supplies on its way to resupply, then form it up in a fleet with another ship or ships with supplies to spare and then send the fleet to the resupply depot.
3. A good idea is to build ships with lots of Supply Storage components and add them to your fleet. Later in the game, you get Solar Collectors which generate supplies from solar energy and Emergency Supply components which add at least 1000 supply to a ship. At the top of the Resupply tech ladder is the Quantum Reactor. Add this to a ship, and it never runs out of supplies. Or, add a ship with the QR to a fleet, and none of the ships in a fleet run out of supplies.
4. Bases have infinite supplies and can be added to fleets. If you have a base in a system but no resupply depot on a planet, send your ship to the base and form a fleet with the base and your ship low on supplies. Hit End Turn. The next turn, your ship will be maxed out on supplies.
Hope that helps!
