Thing is, it doesn't matter if you're repairing a piece of armor I or a sphereworld core, it just costs you maintenance on the ship/base and takes the same amount of time. It's magic!
If there was a repair rate and/or mineral usage, perhaps putting points into repair at race creation would be worthwhile. As it stands now, I usually just set it at 50 or 75 and build repair bases or dedicated repair ships
