Default OT: Just want to give a shout out to all my Pepys!

So I found out about this weblog, that is posting daily entries from Samuel Pepys diary.

Most of us probably recall being forced to read some excerpts from his diary in high school English class. It chronicles a critical time in English history: the restoration from Cromwell's puritan government to the return of a monarchy. Oh, and he writes a fair bit about eating, drinking, and paying the bills. Real thrilling stuff when you're in high school.

If you found it boring in high school, check it out anyway. One entry a day is a lot easier to take. I'm really getting interested in this guys life.

And when they find it open at work, people are more curious. People tend to avoid the guy browsing a forum with a bullet at the top of the page.

"OK, Ralph's looking at ammunition again"
"Not a good day to add to his project"

[EDIT] Check out new sig

Pepys is brilliant stuff. Every now and again, he recounts his amorous adventures with various women. However, he was always worried his wife might read the diary, so those bits are always written in really bad french or latin so she wouldn't understand it. It cracks me up, because his english is very gentlmanly, but then he breaks into this incredibly lewd French...

Thanks for the link...

What, high school English not subjecting you to him anymore? Meh. Hard to decide if that's good or bad.

He's more than just some guy who worked for the gov't and recorded his extramarital liasons. For example, once a gorrila was on view in 1640's London. He went to see it and recorded how humanlike it was -- the only thing it lacked was speech. IMHO, Sam Pepys was really a renassiance man. A guy with wide tastes, intrests, and still practical.

I believe he was also around to record the great fire of London and maybe the plague. I find it a really interesting insight into the way ppl lived back then.
