OK, so there's no way to rotate the map.
In case it wasn't clear, the reason for asking was not 'line of sight with respect to the character', it was 'line of sight with respect to the player....

But that depends entirely on the need for escort/support ships. For example, in the age of sail, the only need for smaller ships was for scouting duties (they were faster) not for stand-up battles....
