Kingdom of Karan - fix .... oops!
Hey all. I just realized that after making some final tweaks to the .map file, I forgot to add back in the #defaultmapzoom (which the map editor doesn't save or add). Hence, you may get castles and/or temples that are too large-looking to fit in a small province. I've sent the fix to Illwinter. If you've already downloaded the map, just replace karan.map with this one:
http://www.techno-mage.com/~targa/mapfix.zip
This will make map icons (flags, castles, temples) appear a little smaller than default. Sorry about that. If there's still a problem with them being too large, you can load karan.map in a text editor and change the line, "#defaultmapzoom 1.5" to a larger number.
If you just want to fix it yourself, here's what it should look like:
#imagefile karan.tga
#domVersion 175
#defaultmapzoom 1.5

You forgot to provide a fixed "karan2.dry" file.

Yep, sure did. The Kingdom of Karan is out of warranty now though, since I've already started on another map.

I believe what he is saying is he's improved it and adjusted it enough to try to appeal to as many people as he could and now will let you change it and fix it how you'd like if you have any problems.
I have no problem with the map, it's quite a contribution to the community and I appreciate Targa's efforts. I was even going to make a scenario of it (including the Ogre Lord) for multiple players with advanced starting locations, so that it might be properly appreciated.

I understand that. Clearly. The point I was trying, not very well, to make is that those that download the file from IW, and do not take the time to read this forum thread, will get a Version that was not what he, apparently, intended them to see, else he would not have created any patch at all. Since he made the effort to provide a fix for the "wet" Version, it only makes sense that the fix for the "dry" Version also be provided. That is, assuming that the Version on the IW site is updated with the fix, or that IW hosts the patch file.
I fixed the problem for my own use. It's a trivial task. BTW, I know how to use GIMP and Photoshop so if there was anything about his map that I didn't like (and there isn't), I'm quite capable of tweaking it myself. I wouldn't pester Targa about it.
My post wasn't about my own desires. Try not to be so serious, Zen. I was trying to think about others who download this superb map from IW.

I will always try to be serious when it comes to peoples contributions, whatever they may be, to the community.
While I understand the "for the newbies" all too well I also understand where he is coming from and I'm sure he knows that as well.

Re: Kingdom of Karan - fix .... oops!
No worries. I understand my own viewpoint, as well as both of yours.
That being said, let me also state that this is not technically a "bug". If you were to play the dry Version, you'd have some instances where temple and/or castle sprites pushed into bordering provinces if you happened to build them in very small provinces. Not a game-killer, just looks kinda shabby. Also, the dry Version was added as a favor to those who dislike the "swim upriver" feature, and was sorta like an "unsupported Version" of the map. And Lastly, I don't even know if #defaultmapzoom 1.5 is going to make everything small enough to fit in small provinces. Even with that, people may still have the problem, simply because I didn't build a castle and temple in every single province to test it.
At any rate, just so I don't have any skeletons in my closet (and because Arryn does have a valid point, as well as guessing correctly that I'm a perfectionist), I've added #defaultmapzoom 1.5 to karan2.dry, zipped everything up in a new file, and sent it to Kris. This is the final Version of Kingdom of Karan.
As a final note: After spending 100+ hours (more or less....I didn't keep track) on this map, I'm tired of looking at it, posting polls to get input, tweaking, adjusting, and trying to keep everyone happy...and still getting complaints (like the borders being too hard to see). That's where I was coming from, and I think Zen knew that. Hey, it's a freebie, take what you can get people!
